Draft New Hampshire Solid Waste Management Plan Available for Public Comment
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) has prepared a draft of the New Hampshire Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP), which is available for public comment on the NHDES website. The SWMP is a 10-year, high-level plan outlining goals, strategies and actions intended to reduce generation of solid waste, increase diversion from disposal, achieve the state’s solid waste disposal reduction goal, support the state’s solid waste management hierarchy, and maintain adequate capacity for management of waste generated in New Hampshire. A final version of the SWMP will be published by October 1, 2022.
The NH Solid Waste Working Group, which was established to assist NHDES with planning for New Hampshire's solid waste future, advised NHDES in the development of the draft plan. Reagan Bissonnette, Executive Director, serves as NRRA's representative on the working group. In addition, four NRRA members serve on the working group. Municipal members include Brian Patnoe (NRRA board member) from the Town of Lancaster, NH representing rural communities with source-separated recycling, Duncan Watson from the City of Keene, NH representing innovative municipal waste management, and Marc Morgan from the City of Lebanon, NH representing publicly-owned landfills. Associate member Adam Clark from the City of Concord, NH represents cities with single stream recycling.
Instructions for Submitting Comments: NHDES will accept comments on the draft SWMP until 4:00 PM, August 26, 2022. Only written comments will be accepted. Comments may be sent by mail or email (email is preferred). NHDES will consider the submitted comments in the final issue of the SWMP but will not be responding to comments directly.
