Executive Director, Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District, VT

The Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District (NEKWMD), located in the northeast corner of Vermont, seeks an experienced, forward-thinking leader and communicator to serve as the next Executive Director, replacing a long-tenured and highly regarded Executive Director. 

The Northeast Kingdom (NEK) represents over 2,000 square miles of Vermont and is bordered to the north by Canada and to the east by northern New Hampshire.  The NEK offers four seasons of bountiful recreation opportunities in a raw and authentic natural setting. The region also boasts a robust and creative economy and a progressive and growing local food and drink scene.  The NEK is full of adventure.  From skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing in the winter to summer swims, scenic drives and epic sunsets.  Year-round biking, hiking, music, arts and cultural events attract visitors from New England, Canada, and beyond.  The NEK has a relaxing quality of life that is hard to beat.

The Executive Director is appointed by and reports to the Board of Supervisors which is made up of at least one representative from each of the 49 member towns and oversees an operating budget of just over $1 million. The NEKWMD owns and operates a materials recovery facility in Lyndonville, VT, supports an additional 25 facilities throughout the region and provides hazardous waste collection and remote collection events.  There are ten additional employees, all who report directly to the Executive Director.  The next Executive Director should be a strong and regular communicator of information to the Board and the member communities, possess demonstrated managerial and budgeting skills and the ability to make recommendations and implement changes as a need to ensure the optimum efficiency of the District’s operations.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred in the field of Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Business Administration or similar degree and five years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates likely success in the position.  Salary range to $85,000 with an opportunity for growth and includes a comprehensive benefits package, starting salary commensurate with qualifications.  The Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District is an equal opportunity employer.
